| | Backround info Luffy's dream is to become the "Pirate King".
He is seen as the carefree and sometimes stupid captain of the Straw Hat pirates and is the son of Monkey D. Dragon, brother of Portgas D. Ace, and the grandson of vice-admiral, Monkey D. Garp. His Straw Hat (from which he gets his nickname "Straw Hat Luffy") was given to him by the pirate captain "Red Haired" Shanks, who inspired him to become pirate when he was still a child. Luffy grew up in a town named Fushia Village. He ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit, as a mistake and protest against being treated as a child, giving his body the streangth and stretchability of rubber. Luffy can stretch any part of his body (nose, arms, legs, toes, ears, torso, a.s.o). While defending the Red Hair pirates' honor from a gang of mountain bandits, Luffy is kidnapped by their leader, Higuma. Higuma takes Luffy hostage and escapes to sea so that he makes sure that no one will follow, throwing Luffy overboard when he have no use of him anymore. Luffy, who can not swim, is then almost swallowed by a fearsome Sea King; one of the many sea monsters that live into the oceans of the One Piece world. But Shanks saves him from the creature, losing his arm in the process. This event makes Luffy's determination even stronger and when Shanks and crew leave the island, Luffy decides to set his sights on becoming the "King of Pirates".
He starts his journey from the village in a little boat but suddenly hits an underwater current which wrecks the boat but Luffy manages to hide in a wine barrel. After a wile the pirate ship, who’s captain is an overweight lady named Alvida, finds the barrel and takes it on board (she finds him on another boat that she’s plundering). Luffy, who managed to sleep in the barrel, wakes up when a few of Alvidas crew members tries to open it. He jumps out of the barrel and knocks the crew members unconscious at the same time except for one, Coby. Coby becomes Luffys first friend on his journey, but he doesn’t join his crew. Coby dreams of becoming a marine. After meeting Alvida Luffy calls her a fat old lady, which Alvida doesn’t like.
Luffy though doesn’t care and fights her, and wins. After that they get ashore at a little village were there is a marine headquarter. Luffy gets the news that the ledgendary swordsman and pirate hunter, Roronoa Zoro is being (held) captive there by the navy and decides right away to make him a member of his pirate crew. They go and see him and after a chat with him, a little girl in town and the marine headquarter boss’s son, he decides to free Zoro on the condition that he joins him to be a pirate. Zoro accepts his proposal (after refusing at first) and gets rescued. He and Zoro beat the navy guys and continues their journey. After a wile, Luffys crew (the strawhat pirate crew) consist of Roronoa Zoro (swordsman), Nami (navigator), Usopp (sniper), Sanji (chef), a few people he picked up during the journey, and they decide to enter the “Grand line”, the most dangerous of all seas. With a little difficulty (and a meeting with a giant wale) they manage to get in and begin the real adventure. On the Grand Line they pick up the crew members Tony Tony Chopper (doctor), Nico Robin (Archaeologist) and Franky (Shipwright).
Before Franky joined, the crew fought with the “CP9”, strong soldiers from the navy. After beating the “CP9”, their beloved ship “Going Merry” fell apart, sending a message to them that she wanted to stay with them longer but that it wasn’t possible. After the battle and the farwell of “Going Merry”, Franky built a new, bigger and better ship, with A LOT of special gear. The new ship is named “Thousand Sunny”. After a wile, the straw hat pirates meet Brook (Musician and skeleton) in a mist that’s been over a certain area at sea for many years. After beating zombies on a weard ship, Brook joins the crew and they sail onwards.
Luffy tells almost every person he meets that he’ll become the “Pirate King” and when he told Rayleigh this, and was told he would have to conquer the new world, he said he didn't want to conquer anything but instead thinks that the Pirate King is the guy with the most freedom in the world. After some time, the crew geats blown away by the navy and are scattered all over the world (or at least that is what Luffy is hoping for). Luffy lands on a island which appear to be an Amazon island. Luffy gets captured after eating some poisonous mushrooms and is shown (naked) to the village people, and it appears that the women on the island has never seen a male before. After trying to ecape, Luffy meets the very beautiful princess of the island. She and her sisters have the ability to turn people into stone but as they try it on Luffy, it has no effect. It seems the attack can only affect the ones with an sinful mind, and since Luffy is still pure and doesn’t have sexual thoughts about women or men, he is not affected.

| | personality Luffy is a silly person with a certain charm in his goofiness and he likes to play around and discover new things. He’s honest and doesn’t budge an inch in his beliefs. If he doesn’t like something, he’ll say so, and vice versa. The things he enjoys most in life are adventures, frendship, food and his goals.
Insult his friends and your in BIG trouble. Though, if you have a reason for treating his friends poorly, he will forgive you easily (he is not the kind of guy how holds a grudge for long). If you take his food you won’t be happy for long; food is almost EVERYTHING to this boy. The one thing that means more to him is his straw hat, that he got from Shanks in return for the promise to become an even greater pirate than him, and that, one day, they would meet at sea, both as real pirates. Touch his hat and you’re screwed; you wont live to see another day.
If Luffy sees someting he wants to explore or play with, he WILL do it and almost no one can stop him if he doesn’t consider him/her important enough to listen to, like Shanks, but only because he know how to handle him and he have Luffy’s respect.

| | Abilities Luffy gained stretching powers from eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi at the cost of never being able to swim again, like the rest of the Devil Fruit users in One Piece. As a result, Luffy's body gained the properties of rubber, giving him stretching abilities.
Luffy uses the flexibility of his legs, arms, head and alike to achieve emormous amount of speed to hit the enemies with devastating impact. His rubber body is virtually immune to firearm attacs. The same will happen with, blunt objects, punches deflect off his body harmlessly. Fighters with superhuman strength however, such as CP9 member Rob Lucci, have proven that he’s capable of damaging Luffy regardless of his normal resistance. The same goes for arrows, swords, knifes and such.
Luffy's body are also not affected by electricity, and he is also able to store large amounts of liquids in his body (such as water and oil). His most powerful abilities are his upgraded Gears. Luffy's Gears are used to change his basic attacks, and are regarded as different forms of his regular body. Up until now, Luffy has used two forms in the story; Gear Second and Gear Third. He has also been shown as capable of using both techniques at the same time, although it takes a lot of strain on his body.
Lastly, Luffy has also demonstrated the natural ability to intimidate an enemy into submission without throwing a single punch, much like his hero Red-haired Shanks, who did the same to the local sea monster at Luffy's village (This ability is known as "spirit" in the world of One Piece).
